New thinking needed at SA ports

New, out of the box thinking is needed by South African ports to accommodate larger vessels. This is according to Ton Bestenbreur, independent ports operations and logistics consultant at the university of Stellenbosch. Bestenbreur was speaking at the annual African Ports Evolution conference and exhibition in Durban this week. “Maersk Line desires 6 000 container moves in under 24 hours for its 18 000 TEU vessels. In Maart vanjaar het die invoertarief op koring amper drievoudig verhoog, van R157 tot R461 per ton, in ’n poging om die kwynende plaaslike bedryf van ondergang te red.

Welkome reën het sedert verlede week wyd oor die Wes-Kaap geval, tot die verligting van koringboere wat vroeër in kurkdroë grond begin plant het. Volgens Andries Theron, vise-president van Graan SA en koringboer van die Swartland, is boere in die Wes-Kaap verheug oor die uitkoms. “Die huidige reën is nog nie te laat om ’n goeie oes vanjaar te verkry nie.
